- Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
- Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
- Armenia ↗Armenia's land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against or restrict travel near the Azerbaijan border (parts of Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik and Tavush). Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Yerevan and its day-trip ring.
- Armenia ↗Check entry rules for your passport on the official Armenian foreign ministry pages; many nationalities enter visa-free and others use the e-visa, but only apply on the government portal.
- Armenia ↗Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries; men remove hats, and some women wear a scarf over the head.
The Lake Sevan Region is Gegharkunik province: one big lake at 1,900 m, the Sevanavank peninsula almost everyone photographs, and a calmer north and west shore where Armenians keep summer houses. The peninsula is about an hour by road from Yerevan, so most visitors come and go in a day. Sleep over only for a full beach afternoon, a sunrise on the water, or the north-shore villages on the way to Dilijan.

- July and August fill the peninsula beaches and the Sevan–Shorzha road; book lakeside beds ahead for weekends.
- Winter freezes parts of the lake and closes most beach services; the monastery road stays open but icy.
- The east and south-east shore is close to the Azerbaijan border — read travel advice before going beyond the main lake circuit.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sevanavank peninsula | Yerevan | 75 min | unknown | Marshrutkas run year-round to the lake and the Ijevan/Dilijan vans stop here; last return times vary — check on the day. |
| Shorzha | Sevan | 60 min | unknown | Lakeside train continues around the north shore; a taxi is the reliable option. |
| Gavar | Sevan | 70 min | unknown | West shore; combine with the southbound road rather than doubling back. |
| Vardenis | Sevan | 100 min | unknown | South-east corner for Makenyats and Vanevan monasteries; few beds, so start early. |
Bags between cities
No luggage-forwarding habit here; travel with your bag or leave it at your Yerevan hotel and take a day bag.

- Swimming weather is roughly June to early September; July and August are the only reliably warm beach months. Winters are long and the lake partly freezes.
The lake is cooler than Yerevan at every time of year — pack a layer even in midsummer, and expect afternoon wind on the water.
