Lion's Head
Go for one night, two if you hike: base here for the Bruce Trail lookout, the harbour and dark-sky stargazing, and drive to Tobermory.
Lion's Head is a village of about 1,000 on the Bruce Peninsula, halfway between Owen Sound and Tobermory, on the Niagara Escarpment above Georgian Bay. It is small, walkable and free to park in, and it works as a quieter base for the peninsula's hiking, paddling and stargazing. One night covers the village and the lookout; two nights add Greig's Caves or a day in Tobermory. Summer weekends fill the marina parking and the beach.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer weekends strain parking between the marina and the beach: arrive before mid-morning.
- Climbing on the escarpment sits in a legal grey zone; never tie ropes to the cedars.
- Cell service is spotty outside the village; download maps and trail info before you drive.
- Black bears are present on the peninsula: store food properly and make noise on trails.
- The nearest hospital is in Owen Sound, about 1 h away.
Very safe. The real risks are summer weekend parking and beach crowding, bears on the trails, cold Georgian Bay water, and the 1 h drive to the nearest hospital in Owen Sound.
