Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Old Town & Triple Bridge audio walk in Ljubljana. 3 stops: Triple Bridge and Prešeren Square, Central Market and Plečnik Colonnade and St Nicholas Cathedral. Compact and car-free: Prešeren Square, the Triple Bridge, the Central Market and the river; go in the morning or evening.

Prešeren Square and the Triple Bridge east along the Ljubljanica to the Dragon Bridge and the cathedral. Underfoot: cobbles and paved embankments; slope: flat; shade: medium.

Ljubljana is small enough to read in one long walk, and it rewards a slower reading. A Roman town, a Habsburg provincial seat, an earthquake, one architect and a green-minded modern capital all sit within a few hundred metres of the river.

Before you start: Old Town: keep noise down late at night; residents live above the cafés. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Triple Bridge and Prešeren Square

    Tromostovje

Stop 1 of 3: Triple Bridge and Prešeren Square. Locally, Tromostovje. Arrival point: Prešeren Square.

The city's centre: 20 minutes for the three bridges, the square and a first look at the river; best early or at dusk.

He added two footbridges on either side of an older road bridge and made the Triple Bridge, finished in the early 1930s. Above the Triple Bridge the embankments are open squares and terraces; below it, the market colonnade makes a long covered street; further downstream the water is quieter, with willows and small boats.

Bikes and scooters share the paths: watch when you cross. Busy in the evening; calm at 08:00. None. Stand on the middle bridge and look along the river. Walk along the embankment to the Central Market. What is special about the three bridges? Jože Plečnik added two footbridges beside the older central one in the early 1930s, so pedestrians could cross next to the road bridge.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Central Market and Plečnik Colonnade. It's about 3 minutes on foot, about 150 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk along the embankment. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Central Market and Plečnik Colonnade

    Osrednja tržnica

Stop 2 of 3: Central Market and Plečnik Colonnade. Locally, Osrednja tržnica. Arrival point: Vodnikov trg.

Fruit, cheese and food stalls under a colonnade by the river: go in the morning; it thins out by early afternoon.

Ask before photographing stallholders. Best 08:00–11:00; closes early on Saturday and Sunday. Walk the open-air stalls first, then the colonnade. Buy a snack and a coffee by the river. When should I go? Between 08:00 and 11:00 on a weekday; the colonnade is quieter and stalls are full. Is it open on Sundays? Mostly no; check the market notice. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 3: St Nicholas Cathedral. It's about 2 minutes on foot, about 100 metres to the east. Route: Walk behind the market. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. St Nicholas Cathedral

    Stolnica sv. Nikolaja

Stop 3 of 3: St Nicholas Cathedral. Locally, Stolnica sv. Nikolaja. Arrival point: Dolničarjeva ulica, behind the Central Market.

A free, fifteen-minute stop beside the Central Market: go in between services, look at the bronze doors and the painted dome, and leave if a Mass has started.

Shoulders and knees covered, quiet voices, no flash photos. Quiet on weekday mornings; tour groups pass through around 11:00 to 15:00, and Sunday mornings belong to worshippers. Cover shoulders and knees; hats off inside. Do not walk through the nave during Mass; wait at the back or come back later. Can I go in during Mass? Only to sit quietly at the back. Sightseeing waits until the service ends. What is worth looking at? The painted dome and the baroque plan inside, and the bronze west doors, which carry scenes of the local church and were added in the 1990s.
