Llandrindod Wells is a Victorian spa town in Powys, Mid Wales, built around a lake, a park and three grand hotels that face each other across Temple Gardens. The centre is walkable in an hour or two; the reason to sleep here is the Heart of Wales Line, the Elan Valley reservoirs 20 km west and quiet Radnorshire walking. It is a stop, not a destination week.

Trains on the Heart of Wales Line are infrequent (roughly four or five a day each way) and the line is single-track: check times before you plan a day out.
Many cafés, the museum and some hotels close on Mondays or out of season: check ahead.
Mobile signal is patchy in the hills around the town.
Rural roads are narrow with passing places; drive on the left.

A quiet, low-crime town; the real risks are rural roads, patchy phone signal and a long walk home after a late night at the pubs.
