Luang Prabang is a dawn-and-dusk town: temples and the morning market before 10:00, a long lunch out of the heat, the river or the night market after 17:00 — and be inside before the guesthouse door locks.
The old town sits on a small peninsula between the Mekong and the Nam Khan, so everything is a walk. The trips that go wrong are the ones that arrive late: few flights land after dark, the town goes quiet from about 23:00, and many small guesthouses lock. Four walking clusters cover a first visit; Kuang Si and the Pak Ou caves are trips away from one kept bed.

- Temples: Shoulders and knees covered, shoes off inside the halls, and do not point your feet at Buddha images.
- Monks: Women should not touch monks or hand things to them directly; step aside on the pavement.
- Head and feet: Do not touch anyone's head; do not point your feet at people or images.
- Alms-giving: Stay on the far side, keep quiet, no flash and no touching; do not follow the monks along the street.
- Greetings: Palms together in a light bow (nop) with 'sabaidee'; keep a calm voice.
- Photos: Ask before photographing monks or people at close range.

Scams and watch-outs

- Motorbike and bicycle rental damage claims: photograph every scratch before you leave and keep the receipt.
- Kuang Si and boat tours sold on the street with hidden extras: get the total price, the pick-up and the return time in writing.
