Best places to visit in Madagascar: top cities, regions and sights

For a first trip, base 1–2 nights in Antananarivo, add 2 nights at Andasibe for indri lemurs, then pick one axis: the RN7 south by car with a driver (Isalo, Ranomafana, Ifaty) or a flight north to Nosy Be. Two weeks cannot cover south, north and west together.

How to build the trip, step by step

Step 1: land in Antananarivo and give it 1–2 nights. See the Rova and the Analakely market in the morning, then move on; the capital is a base, not the point of the trip.

Step 2: go east to Andasibe-Mantadia for 2 nights. It is the shortest reliable lemur fix from the capital, and indri are heard before they are seen. Pair it with a community reserve for a night walk, since night walks inside the national park are often banned.

Step 3: choose one long axis, not three. By road, the RN7 south runs Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa, Ranomafana, Isalo and finishes at Toliara, Ifaty or Anakao: allow 7–9 nights with a driver. By air, fly north to Nosy Be for reefs and island hopping, or to Diego Suarez for Ankarana and the northern bays.

Step 4: add the west only if you have the time and the season. The Avenue of the Baobabs near Morondava is a 1–2 night add-on; the Tsingy de Bemaraha beyond it needs 2–3 nights and a 4x4, and the route shuts in the rains.

Step 5: book the domestic legs early and never on your international flight day. Schedules on Madagascar Airlines and Tsaradia change at short notice, and a missed connection can cost two days.

  • Two weeks, first trip: Tana 2 + Andasibe 2 + RN7 south 7–8, fly out of Toliara if you can.
  • Two weeks, beaches: Tana 1 + Nosy Be 5–6 + Diego Suarez and Ankarana 3–4.
  • Three weeks: RN7 south, then fly Toliara to Tana and out to Morondava and the Tsingy.

Cities and regions in more detail

Antananarivo is the capital and arrival base: the Rova, the markets and the road east to Andasibe. On the RN7, Antsirabe is a highland spa town of rickshaws and craft workshops, and Fianarantsoa is the Betsileo capital with an old upper town and nearby tea estates and wine.

The south-west pairs Isalo's canyons with the beaches at Ifaty and Anakao, both reached from Toliara at the end of the RN7. The north-west is Nosy Be and its islets for reefs and resorts, with the Tsingy de Bemaraha and the Avenue of the Baobabs further south along the west coast. The far north is Diego Suarez, Ankarana and the bays; the east coast adds Île Sainte-Marie for whales and quiet beaches.

Notes before you commit

Distances look short on the map and are not: Tana to Antsirabe is 4–5 hours by taxi-brousse, and Tana to Toliara is 18–24 hours. A car with a driver is the default for the RN7 and most circuits, at €60–100 a day including fuel (2026 estimate); agree in writing who pays the driver's meals, bed and fuel for detours.

Domestic flights save days but are the least predictable part of the plan. Taxi-brousses are cheap and local; crash rates are high and long routes often run overnight, so avoid night services. In the far west, ferries and river crossings shut in the rains, which is why the Tsingy is a dry-season destination.

Tap water is not drinkable; buy sealed bottles or use a filter. Power cuts are common in Tana, so carry a power bank. Park gates run about 07:00–16:00. Check your travel insurance covers hiking, 4x4 transfers and any diving before you book the expensive legs.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Madagascar?

Antananarivo and Andasibe for a first taste, then one big region: the RN7 south (Ranomafana, Isalo, Ifaty), Nosy Be and the north-west, or Diego Suarez and Ankarana in the far north. The Tsingy de Bemaraha and the Avenue of the Baobabs are west-coast add-ons, dry season only.

How many days do you need in Madagascar?

Ten days is the practical minimum for Tana, Andasibe and one region. Two weeks fits the RN7 south or Nosy Be with time to breathe. Three weeks lets you add the west coast and the Tsingy without spending every second day in a car.

Which areas of Madagascar suit a first visit?

The highlands around Antananarivo plus Andasibe, then either the RN7 south by car with a driver or a flight to Nosy Be. Both are well set up for visitors. Save the far north and the Tsingy for a second trip unless you have three weeks.

When is the best time to visit Madagascar?

Roughly April–November, the dry season. Rainforest parks such as Andasibe and Ranomafana are good September–December. The Tsingy de Bemaraha and the west coast tracks are dry season only, May–November. Check conditions before booking the far west.

Do I need a car and driver in Madagascar?

For the RN7 and most circuits, yes: €60–100 a day including fuel (2026 estimate), and the driver doubles as a fixer. Taxi-brousses are far cheaper but slow and often run overnight, which is when crash rates are highest. Domestic flights cover the longest hops.
