Malabo
Malabo is a small, expensive island capital: two days cover the cathedral, the Plaza de España and the seafront. Sort the visa, the hotel pickup and the photography rules before you fly, and carry euros or CFA cash.
Malabo is compact but slow to work with. A hotel near the plaza puts the cathedral and the seafront within a short taxi ride, and most stops are outdoors. The trips that go wrong are the unprepared ones: no visa in advance, a camera pointed at a government building, cards that do not work, or a taxi fare agreed too late. Keep the plan short and keep your papers on you.

- Greetings: Greet before asking anything: buenos días or buenas tardes, then a handshake. Rushing straight to your request is rude.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people. Never photograph government buildings, the presidential area, police, soldiers, the port or the airport; cameras can be confiscated.
- Papers: Carry your passport copy and be patient and polite at checkpoints; do not argue or offer money.
- Dress: Neat, covered clothing in town and in church; beachwear only on the beach.
- Church: Cover shoulders and knees, keep quiet during mass and do not take photos of worshippers.
- Right hand: Give, receive and eat with the right hand.
- Politics: Avoid political conversation, and do not criticise the president or the government in public.
