Malé is the transfer hub, not the destination: give it one night when your flight will not connect, and use a morning for the museum, fish market and mosque before the heat.
Malé is a crowded island about 2 km long, with narrow streets, scooters and no shade. Most visitors pass through it on the way to a resort or a local island. The trips that go wrong are the ones that treat the capital as a stopover of minutes: a late flight, a seaplane that has stopped for the day, or a public ferry that leaves once a day. Four clusters cover Malé and Hulhumalé.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Dress: Cover shoulders and knees in Malé and on local islands; swimwear only at resorts and designated tourist beaches.
- Greetings: Say assalaamu alaikum or a plain hello; a handshake is fine with men, and wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Mosques: Remove shoes, cover arms and legs, women cover their hair, and do not enter during prayers or if the prayer hall is closed to non-Muslims.
- Prayer times: Shops close for 15 to 30 minutes at each of the five daily prayers; plan around them and do not photograph people praying.
- Alcohol and pork: Not sold outside resorts and safari boats, and not to be brought in.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, especially women; do not photograph government buildings or the security forces, and check drone rules (a permit is needed).
- Right hand: Give, receive and eat with the right hand.
- Ramadan: Do not eat, drink or smoke in public in daylight.

- Taxi drivers who name a higher price for a bag or a night ride: the fare is set; check the sign or ask your hotel what it should be.
- Unlicensed 'guides' at the harbour: use your hotel or a registered operator.
