Manama is a morning-and-evening city: do Bab Al Bahrain and the souq at 08:00, spend midday in the museum, and take a car to every cluster.
Manama's sights are small and close, but the roads are wide and hot for most of the year. The trips that go wrong walk in July, miss the one museum hour, or forget that Muharraq is a separate island 20 minutes away. Four clusters cover a first visit: the souq and Bab Al Bahrain, the National Museum and Beit Al Quran, Adliya, and the pearl houses of Muharraq.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Dress: Cover shoulders and knees in the souq, mosques and government offices; swimwear only at the beach or pool.
- Greetings: Say assalaamu alaikum or hello; a handshake is fine with men, and wait for a woman to offer her hand.
- Mosques: Remove shoes, cover arms and legs, women cover their hair, and do not enter during prayers unless the mosque runs visitor tours.
- Coffee and tea: Accept the small cup of Arabic coffee; shake the cup lightly to signal enough.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people, especially women; do not photograph government buildings, royal palaces, military sites or processions.
- Right hand: Give, receive and eat with the right hand.
- Alcohol: Only in licensed venues; never in public and never before driving.
- Ramadan: Do not eat, drink or smoke in public in daylight.

- Al Fateh Grand Mosque and other mosques: covered shoulders and knees, scarf for women, shoes off; visiting hours are set.
- Ashura processions: do not photograph or block them; follow the road closures.
- Do not photograph government buildings, royal sites or people without asking.
Scams and watch-outs
- Taxi drivers without a meter who quote a flat 'tourist' price: use a ride-hailing app or insist on the meter and check the fare on your phone.
- Souq shopkeepers who quote 'pearl' or 'gold' prices far above the norm: pearls and gold are sold by weight and grade; compare in two shops and buy only with a receipt and certificate.
- Sellers of 'Bahraini pearls' that are actually cultured or imitation: ask for a certificate from a recognised testing lab before buying.
- Unlicensed guides at Bab Al Bahrain who offer a 'free' tour that ends at a shop: use a registered guide or your hotel.
- Overcharging at tourist-facing cafés: check the price before you order and the service charge on the bill.
