Give Mandu two nights in monsoon or one long day in winter: the ruins spread over 10 km, so sleep in Mandu village, not Indore, 95 km away.
Mandu (Mandav) is a ruined citadel on a Vindhya plateau at 634 m, capital of Malwa sultans between 1401 and 1561 and called Shadiabad, the City of Joy. The monuments run in five clusters across a plateau roughly 10 km long, so you need wheels or a bicycle, not just feet. Most travellers come from Indore as a day trip; sleeping one or two nights in the village is the better call.

Get around
The groups are too far apart to cover all on foot. Hire a car with driver through your hotel for a full day, or rent a bicycle and give it two days. Local guides wait at the main monuments and run a fixed circuit. Autos and shared jeeps cover short hops in the village.

- Temples: Shoes off, walk clockwise around shrines, accept prasad (blessed food) with the right hand; avoid: Leather in Jain temples; entering sanctums that say Hindus only
- Home visit: Bring sweets or fruit; accept tea at least once; avoid: Refusing all food; wearing shoes inside

- Saying no: A firm, polite 'nahi, dhanyavaad' (no, thank you) and keep walking; avoid: Long explanations to touts

Scams and watch-outs
- Ruins are unlit and unfenced: no night walking on the plateau edge.
- Monsoon makes the plateau green but paths slippery and leeches possible.
- Few ATMs and card machines in Mandu: carry cash from Indore or Dhar.
- Mobile signal is patchy on the plateau.
- Guides at the gate are not licensed by a single body: agree the route and price first.
Mandu is a small, low-crime village and the ruins are safe by day. The real risks are heat, slippery monsoon paths, unlit plateau edges after dark and cash-only hotels: carry rupees and finish sightseeing before sunset.
