Marathwada is the dry, history-rich heart of Maharashtra — home to Ellora's cave temples, the Bibi ka Makbara, Daulatabad Fort and the Godavari river at Paithan. Aurangabad is the only practical base with an airport and the widest choice of hotels. The rest of the region (Beed, Latur, Nanded, Dharashiv) is best visited on separate day-trips or as a stopover en route to Karnataka.
