Mariinsk is a small Siberian town on the Trans-Siberian Railway, founded in 1698 and briefly a gold-rush centre. Its main draws are a local museum, a birch-bark (beresta) museum, and a few blocks of 19th-century wooden architecture. The town also held the administration of Siblag, a Soviet gulag. Most travellers pass through by train without stopping; a 3–4 hour layover covers the sights.
