Mary

Come to Mary for the ancient Merv site, a UNESCO World Heritage listing about 30 km east: one night, with a guide, as part of a Turkmenistan itinerary from Ashgabat by air (about 1 hour).

Mary is a city in southeast Turkmenistan and the base for the ruins of ancient Merv, once one of the largest cities in the world on the Silk Road. Merv is a set of walls, fortresses and mausoleums spread over a large area, including the Sultan Sanjar Mausoleum. Independent travel is restricted; visitors normally travel with a guide and a visa arranged in advance. It fits a trip as one day of ruins after Ashgabat or before the Uzbek border.

Get around

Taxis and guided transfer to the Merv ruins (about 30 km (19 mi), 30 to 45 minutes); the site is spread out over several square kilometres and is not walkable in full, so use a car with a guide. City taxis are cheap in local currency: agree the fare first.

Language

Turkmen, a Turkic language close to Azerbaijani and Turkish, is the state language, written in Latin script since the 1990s. Russian is understood by many older and urban people. English is rare outside tour guides and top hotels.

  • Bring water, a hat and sun protection; the Merv site has little shade and midsummer is very hot.
  • Check current visa and permit rules with an official source; independent movement is limited.
  • Photography restrictions may apply, especially near government buildings and military sites; ask your guide.
  • Cash is the main means of payment; bring clean US dollars and check exchange rules.
  • Wear sturdy shoes; the ruins have uneven ground and crumbling walls.
  • Turkmenistan is one of the most restricted destinations in the world: check your government's current travel advice and confirm visa and transit rules with an official source before booking.

Crime affecting visitors is uncommon, but the main risks are legal: follow photography, permit and behaviour rules and stay with your guide.
