The honest verdict
Maseru is a small, low-rise capital on the border with South Africa. Its sights are close together and few; the trips that go wrong are late-afternoon border crossings, mountain drives that run into the dark, and arrivals that assume a scheduled flight. Four short clusters cover a first visit, and a taxi or hired car joins them.

Etiquette: the top three
- Greetings
- Greet first with 'Lumela' (to one person) or 'Lumelang' (to several) before you ask a question; shake hands, often with the left hand supporting the right forearm.
- Forms of address
- Use 'Ntate' for men and ''M'e' for women, as a respectful title, plus the person's name.
- Photos
- Ask before photographing people; do not photograph police, the military, the palace or government buildings.
