Maseru
Maseru is a one-night stop before the mountains: change money, buy a SIM, see the Basotho Hat and the cathedral in a morning, and give Thaba Bosiu a half-day by car — then leave early, because the border posts and the mountain roads both close with daylight.
Maseru is a small, low-rise capital on the border with South Africa. Its sights are close together and few; the trips that go wrong are late-afternoon border crossings, mountain drives that run into the dark, and arrivals that assume a scheduled flight. Four short clusters cover a first visit, and a taxi or hired car joins them.

Get around
Walk inside a cluster by day; ride in a private taxi or a hired car between clusters and out to Thaba Bosiu. There is no metro and no reliable bus; minibus taxis are cheap but confusing.

- Greetings: Greet first with 'Lumela' (to one person) or 'Lumelang' (to several) before you ask a question; shake hands, often with the left hand supporting the right forearm.
- Forms of address: Use 'Ntate' for men and ''M'e' for women, as a respectful title, plus the person's name.
- Photos: Ask before photographing people; do not photograph police, the military, the palace or government buildings.
- Dress: Modest dress in villages, churches and offices; shoulders and knees covered.
- Churches and Sundays: Sunday is for church: keep noise down and expect shops closed; ask before entering a service.
- Blankets: The Basotho blanket is worn as a mark of identity; ask before photographing someone in one, and buy with respect.
