Mayiladuthurai is a Kaveri-delta temple town, not a sight in itself. The town gives you the Mayuranathaswami temple and the river ghats in an hour or two; the reason to stop is the ring of places around it — the Chola temple at Sirkazhi, the ruined port at Poompuhar and the Danish fort at Tranquebar, all within about an hour by bus or car. Sleep here one or two nights and work outward; there is no reason to move hotels between them.
