Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Old town, harbour & Place de France audio walk in Moroni. 4 stops: Old Friday Mosque (Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi), Old market (Ancien marché), Place de France (old-town square) and Moroni harbour edge. Morning cluster: the old Friday mosque, the old market and the harbour edge in the old town, before 10:30 and outside prayer times.

The old town between the harbour entrance and the Place de France (approximate box). Underfoot: narrow streets, broken paving; slope: flat; shade: mixed.

Moroni is a small capital with a large past. It sits on the western flank of a volcano, on an island with no rivers, in a country that has been ruled by sultans, protected by France, taken by mercenaries and split by secession, and that still runs on family, faith and remittances from abroad.

Before you start: Do not photograph the port, soldiers or government buildings. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Old Friday Mosque (Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi)

    Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi

Stop 1 of 4: Old Friday Mosque (Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi). Locally, Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi. Arrival point: Walk from the Place de France.

The old mosque on the harbour front is a landmark to see from outside: fifteen minutes on a morning walk, dressed covered and away from prayer times.

The Old Friday Mosque stands at the water's edge. Can visitors go inside the Old Friday Mosque? Non-Muslims should not enter unless invited. Look from the street, dressed covered, and keep away at prayer times.

Do not enter unless invited; shoulders and knees covered; no photographs of worshippers. Busiest around Friday prayer; quiet on weekday mornings. Building from the street only, and with care; no photographs of worshippers. It is a working mosque, not a museum: there is no ticket and no visitor programme. Dress covered from the moment you leave the hotel; a scarf helps women, long trousers help men.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Old market (Ancien marché). It's about 3 minutes on foot, about 200 metres to the north-west. Route: Walk through the old town. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Old market (Ancien marché)

    Ancien marché

Stop 2 of 4: Old market (Ancien marché). Locally, Ancien marché. Arrival point: Walk from the mosque.

The old market district between the mosque and the Place de France: go in the morning, walk slowly and buy spices or fruit with small notes.

What can I buy at the old market? Spices, cloth, fruit and household goods. Vanilla and ylang-ylang oil are better bought at Volo-Volo or from a stall you trust.

Ask before photographing stall owners, especially women. Crowded mid-morning; quieter after 13:00. Ask first; never of women without permission. Small and easy: 30–45 minutes is enough. Cash only, in KMF or small euro notes; bring change. Vendors expect a greeting first; a quick 'Salaam aleykum' changes the tone. Keep phones and cash out of sight. Enter from the Place de France side and walk the lanes toward the harbour. Ask the price at two stalls before offering about two-thirds.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Place de France (old-town square). It's about 2 minutes on foot, about 100 metres to the north-west. Route: Walk to the square. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Place de France (old-town square)

    Place de France

Stop 3 of 4: Place de France (old-town square). Locally, Place de France. Arrival point: Walk from the Old Friday Mosque or the old market.

The old-town square between the market and the harbour: a shaded stop for coffee and juice, and the start of the morning walk; a rest, not a sight.

The old town of Moroni is a few lanes between the harbour and the Place de France. The Place de France is the open space that holds it together: a square with taxis, a café and shade.

Dress covered; keep phones out of sight in the crowd. Quiet in the morning; fills with traders and taxis by mid-morning. Ask before photographing people; no government buildings. A rest stop, not an attraction: 10–30 minutes. Cafés open early and are the place to phone for a taxi. Cash only; small notes. Do not photograph government buildings or officials. Start here, then walk to the mosque and the old market.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Moroni harbour edge. It's about 4 minutes on foot, about 400 metres to the south-east. Route: Walk to the square. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  5. 4. Moroni harbour edge

    Port de Moroni

Stop 4 of 4: Moroni harbour edge. Locally, Port de Moroni. Arrival point: Walk from the mosque.

The old harbour road where boats and fish are landed: a short morning walk outside the port gate; do not photograph port operations.

Bambao, the sultanate whose seat lay around Iconi and later Moroni, was one of the most important. This is why the taps in Moroni can run dry, why you are asked to use water carefully, and why bottled water is part of the daily cost. Moroni harbour works with small boats and cargo ships, and the fish landed at dawn is the reason the seafood on the Corniche is good.

Do not photograph the port, boats being unloaded or officials. Busiest when boats land in the early morning. No photographs of the port, ships, soldiers or government buildings. You are looking from the road: the port area is restricted. Best at 07:00–09:00 when boats and fish are in.

  6. End of the walk

That's the end of the Old town, harbour & Place de France walk. To carry on, Volo-Volo covered market is about 10 minutes away (taxi north). To carry on, Corniche (seafront hotels) is about 8 minutes away (taxi north).
