Muscat is a low, spread-out city between mountains and sea. Sights are far apart, and the trips that go wrong are the ones that walk in the midday sun, forget that the Grand Mosque is closed on Fridays, or take a taxi with no fare agreed. - Dress: Cover shoulders and knees; women a scarf in mosques; swimwear only at hotel beaches.
- Greetings: Say 'as-salamu alaykum'; handshake with the right hand; wait for a woman to offer hers.
- Mosques: Only the Grand Mosque welcomes visitors, in the morning; other mosques are for worship.
