Mzuzu

Spend 1–2 days in Mzuzu to see the market, museum and nearby lake towns; then move on to Lake Malawi (3+ nights).

Mzuzu is the largest city in northern Malawi, a transport hub with bus links, a modest hotel scene and a few attractions. One to two days cover the main market, museum and a short trip to Karonga or Rumphi before heading to the lake coast.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

  • Greeting: 'Moni, muli bwanji?' and wait for the reply before business; avoid: Launching straight into a question
  • Handshake: Soft handshake, left hand touching your right forearm as respect; avoid: Crushing grips or one-hand passing to elders
  • Clothing: Knees and shoulders covered in towns; avoid: Swimwear off the beach
  • Villages: Ask for the chief or a local guide before walking through; avoid: Wandering into compounds with cameras
  • Food: Accept a little of what is offered; avoid: Eating with the left hand

Scams and watch-outs

  • Scam artists sell fake bus tickets at the Mbeya border; verify tickets before purchase.
  • Bus services can be infrequent; plan extra travel time.
  • No current airline service to Mzuzu; Swiftair ceased in 2012.

Mzuzu is generally safe during daylight; petty scams at bus stations and pickpocketing in markets are the main risks. Avoid walking alone after dark outside the town centre.
