Places by trip length, month and cost

Namibia is a self-drive country: the places below are stops on a loop from Windhoek, not day trips from one base. Two nights per stop is the working minimum, because gravel roads and park gates eat the middle of the day.

Use the table to match a place to your month and budget. Park and camp fees are paid in Namibian dollars; a 2026 estimate for two people self-driving with a 4x2 or 4x4, fuel, camping and some lodge nights sits around N$2,500–4,500 per day, higher in the Jun–Oct high season.

Months are the dry-season window; the coast is a year-round stop because of its cool fog belt.

How to build the trip, step by step

Step 1: fix your nights. Seven days only covers Windhoek → Sossusvlei → Swakopmund → Windhoek. Ten days adds Damaraland and Etosha. Fourteen days lets you slow Etosha to three nights and slot in Spitzkoppe and the Waterberg Plateau.

  • Step 2: book Sossusvlei and Etosha accommodation first — park camps and the gate-side lodges sell out months ahead in Jun–Oct.
  • Step 3: sleep inside the Sesriem gate if you want Dune 45 or Big Daddy before sunrise; leave Deadvlei by 11:00 as the heat builds.
  • Step 4: in Etosha, park at a waterhole and wait rather than driving loops; split nights between Okaukuejo in the west and Namutoni in the east.
  • Step 5: put Swakopmund after the desert — a cool coast day resets you, and Walvis Bay lagoon, Sandwich Harbour and Cape Cross are within reach.
  • Step 6: treat Damaraland as two nights: Twyfelfontein engravings one day, desert elephants in the Huab and Ugab rivers the next.
  • Step 7: add the south (Keetmanshoop, Fish River Canyon, Lüderitz) only on a 14-day-plus trip, as a separate loop from Windhoek.

Notes before you commit

Distances look short on the map and take longer on gravel. Windhoek to Sesriem is roughly five hours; Swakopmund to Etosha is five to six. Never plan to arrive after dark: animals, unlit cattle and soft sand shoulders make night driving the main risk.

  • A 4x2 handles the classic loop in the dry season; a 4x4 is worth it for Kunene, Epupa and deep sand.
  • Fuel up at every town on the southern and western routes; stations are far apart.
  • Etosha is malaria-free in the main camps but the Zambezi and Kunene regions are not — take advice before those legs.
  • Self-drive insurance often excludes gravel damage; check the excess before you sign.
  • Since April 2025 most Western passports need a visa: apply for the e-visa pre-approval online or pay N$1,600 on arrival.

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Namibia?

Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, Etosha National Park, Swakopmund, Damaraland with Twyfelfontein, and Windhoek as the start and end. With more days add Spitzkoppe, Fish River Canyon, Lüderitz and Kolmanskop, the Zambezi region or Kunene and Epupa Falls.

How many days do you need in Namibia?

Ten to fourteen nights for the classic loop: Windhoek, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland, Etosha. Seven days only fits the desert and coast. Add three or more nights for the far south or the Zambezi and Kunene regions.

Which areas of Namibia suit a first visit?

The central loop: Khomas (Windhoek), the Namib around Sossusvlei, Erongo and the coast at Swakopmund, Damaraland in Kunene, and Etosha in the north. It is all tar or good gravel, with fuel, food and lodging every few hours.

When is the best time to visit Namibia?

April to October for the dry season and comfortable desert days. June to October is best for Etosha wildlife, when waterholes concentrate animals. May to September suits Fish River Canyon and the far north; the coast works all year.

Do you need a 4x4 in Namibia?

No for the classic loop in the dry season — a 4x2 with good clearance is enough. Yes for Kunene, Epupa Falls, deep sand at Sossusvlei's last stretch and some Zambezi tracks. Check current road conditions before those legs.

How much does a Namibia trip cost per day?

A 2026 estimate for two people self-driving, with fuel, camping and some lodge nights, is about N$2,500–4,500 per day, higher in the June–October high season. Park fees and vehicle rental are the biggest fixed costs.
