Entry details by step
You do not need a visa for short stays. The 90-day limit applies to the whole Schengen Area, not just the Netherlands. Count back 180 days from your departure date to check you have not already used your allowance.
From 2026, you must have an approved ETIAS before you fly. The application is online and takes about 20 minutes. You will need a valid passport and a debit or credit card to pay the fee.
At the border, have your return ticket, proof of accommodation and proof of funds ready. Border officers can ask for these even if you are visa-free.
Notes and warnings
Your passport must be valid for your entire stay in the Netherlands. There is no six-month rule for US, UK, Canadian, Australian, NZ or Irish citizens, but it is a good idea to have at least three months left on your passport from your departure date.
If you plan to work, study or stay longer than 90 days, you need a different visa or permit. Apply well in advance at the Dutch embassy or consulate in your home country.
ETIAS is not a visa. It is an electronic travel authorisation. You still need to meet the normal entry conditions.
