New York State splits into two trips that do not combine well. New York City is a walking-and-subway trip: 4–5 nights covers museums, Broadway and a borough or two. Upstate is a driving trip: Niagara Falls is about 6.5 hours by car from Manhattan, the Adirondack trailheads 4–5 hours, the Finger Lakes 4–5 hours. Pick one. Fly into Albany (ALB) or Buffalo (BUF) for the upstate week and rent a car there.

Night sequences

5 nights: New York City only: 5 nights, Manhattan plus one Brooklyn day.
8 nights: New York City 4 nights, then Amtrak to Albany and 4 nights in the Adirondacks or the Finger Lakes with a rental car.

Winter travel upstate can be disrupted by heavy lake-effect snow (especially near Buffalo/Rochester).
Summer weekends in the Adirondacks and Catskills see significant traffic congestion on main routes.
