Western North Carolina is one mountain region with two usable bases about two hours apart. Asheville puts you near the Biltmore Estate, the Blue Ridge Parkway's highest stretch and the Smokies; Boone puts you in the High Country near Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mountain. A car is not optional here: outside Asheville, buses barely exist and the good roads are two-lane mountain highways. Pick one base for a short trip, or split Asheville 2 + Boone 2 if you have four nights.

Several degrees cooler than Asheville; snow and ice are common from December to March and the Parkway closes first up here.

October leaf season is the peak: book beds weeks ahead and expect slow traffic on the Parkway. Late spring is the quietest good window.
