Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with R…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Baltic states ↗Treat the Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian borders with Russia and Belarus as closed to your plans: crossings are restricted, change within hours, and sit under advisories on the far side.
  • Baltic states ↗Book open-jaw flights (into Tallinn or Vilnius, out of the other) so the line runs one way; Riga is the biggest airport if you need a single hub.
  • Baltic states ↗Midsummer (23–24 June) is the biggest holiday in all three countries: cities empty, many businesses close and island and coast transport sells out.
  • Estonia ↗Estonia is in the EU and the Schengen area; the EU Entry/Exit System applies to non-EU visitors. Check the official EU and Estonian sources for your passport.
  • Estonia ↗The land border with Russia is not a route for casual travel; check your government's advice before going near it.
  • Estonia ↗Winter tyres are required in the cold months; rental cars include them, but confirm if you drive.

North Estonia is Tallinn plus a ring of coast, bog and manor country within 30–100 km of it. Almost everything outside the capital is reachable as a day trip, so most travellers should keep one bed in Tallinn and spend the days outward: Lahemaa's bogs and manors, the cliffs and waterfalls of the north coast, Rakvere's castle, and the small resort villages along the shore. Split the nights only if you want early starts in the national park or a slow coastal weekend.

  • Trying to cover Lahemaa, Rakvere, Paldiski and the coast in two days is mostly bus time.
  • Outside Tallinn, buses to small villages can stop by early evening; a missed last bus means a taxi or an unplanned night.
  • North Estonia is the most industrial part of the country; some coastal towns are working ports, not resorts.

Bags between cities

Not a common service here; most trips are day returns from one Tallinn hotel, so luggage stays put.

Tallinn and the north coast
Best June–August for beaches and long days; May and September are quieter and cheaper. Winters are cold and dark, with the sea freezing in some years — Jägala Falls freezes in cold spells.
Inland (Raplamaa, Järvamaa, Rakvere)
Slightly colder and less windy than the coast; bog walks are best late spring to early autumn.

Summer weekends fill Tallinn hotels and Lahemaa guesthouses; book ahead for June–August and for the December Christmas market.

Regional passes

Verdict first

Tallinn public transport card

check

Useful for trams and buses inside the capital; visitors ride free on Tallinn's public transport only with a registered card, so check the current rule.

Regional bus tickets (Põhja-Eesti)

buy

Buy per ride or on board where allowed; county lines are cheap and there is no single regional pass worth chasing.

Train (Elron) to Rakvere and Paldiski

buy

Often faster and more comfortable than the bus on those two lines; check timetables before relying on a late return.
