Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Czech Republic ↗Czechia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Czech Republic ↗The currency is the Czech koruna (CZK), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion and avoid street exchange booths.
  • Czech Republic ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette bought before you drive on them.

This is the Czech Republic's industrial east: Olomouc for a baroque old town at half of Prague's prices, Ostrava for post-mining culture and the best onward links to Poland and Slovakia, and the Jeseníky mountains and a string of castles in between. Trains between Olomouc and Ostrava run roughly hourly and take about 1 h, so one base covers most of it.

Olomouc 2, day trip to Bouzov or Helfštýn
4 nights
Olomouc 2 + Ostrava 2, with Opava or Český Těšín as a half-day
5 nights
Olomouc 2 + Jeseník 1 + Ostrava 2, if you want the mountains
  • Ostrava has a higher crime rate than the rest of the Czech Republic, concentrated in parts of the city after dark; the centre and the Dolní Vítkovice area are busy and normal. Take the usual city precautions.
  • Mountain weather in the Jeseníky changes fast; trails are marked but snow can linger into May.
  • Many castles and small museums close Monday and shut for the winter (roughly November–March).

Day-trips door to door

Bouzov CastleOlomouc75 mincheckTrain toward Litovel plus a seasonal bus or a taxi; the last connection back is early — check before you go.
OpavaOstrava45 mincheckFrequent trains; a half day is enough for the centre and the museum.
Český TěšínOstrava50 mincheckWalk the bridge into Polish Cieszyn; bring ID.

Bags between cities

Left-luggage lockers exist at Olomouc and Ostrava stations; there is no useful same-day luggage courier between them.

Olomouc and the lowlands
Warm, fairly dry summers; the old town is walkable year-round but sights thin out in winter.
Ostrava basin
Similar to Olomouc; air quality is worst on still winter days.
Jeseníky mountains
Ski season roughly December–March; the Praděd road and shuttle run in the warm months only.

May, June and September are the sweet spot: long days, open castles, no festival crush.

Regional passes

Verdict first

ČD single tickets

buy

Point-to-point fares are cheap; a rail pass rarely pays inside one region.

ČD OneTicket / app purchase

buy

Covers trains and many regional buses in one purchase; useful for castle day trips.

Ostrava city card

skip

Only worth it if you stack several paid museums and the technical trail into one day; run the individual fares first.
