  • Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
  • Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
  • Armenia ↗Armenia's land borders with Azerbaijan and Turkey are closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against or restrict travel near the Azerbaijan border (parts of Syunik, Vayots Dzor, Gegharkunik and Tavush). Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Yerevan and its day-trip ring.
  • Armenia ↗Check entry rules for your passport on the official Armenian foreign ministry pages; many nationalities enter visa-free and others use the e-visa, but only apply on the government portal.
  • Armenia ↗Cover shoulders and knees in churches and monasteries; men remove hats, and some women wear a scarf over the head.

Northern Armenia is three provinces — Shirak (Gyumri), Lori (Vanadzor, Alaverdi, Stepanavan) and Tavush (Dilijan, Ijevan, Berd) — each with its own highway out of Yerevan, 1.5–2 hours by road. Gyumri, Vanadzor and Dilijan are easy day-trips; anything past them (Haghpat, Sanahin, the Debed canyon, the Shamshadin hills) rewards an overnight. Sleep in Dilijan for forest and monastery access, in Gyumri for old streets and the road to Georgia, in Alaverdi for the UNESCO pair. Public transport reaches the towns; the monuments need a car, a taxi by the hour, or a tour.

  • The northeast border strip with Azerbaijan is the region's only real danger; do not walk toward it.
  • Mountain roads have potholes and fast traffic; drive in daylight.

Lori and Tavush (Dilijan, Ijevan, Alaverdi)
The greenest corner of Armenia; summer days are warm and humid, autumn is dry and clear. Snow closes high trails from December to March.
Shirak (Gyumri)
Higher and drier than Lori; Gyumri winters are long and well below freezing.

May–June and September–October are the reliable windows; July–August is hot in the valleys but fine in Dilijan's forest.

Regional passes

Verdict first

Hired taxi by the hour

buy

The practical way to link monasteries; about ֏100 per km plus US$3–5 an hour waiting (2026 estimate).

Marshutka (shared van)

check

Cheap between towns, but rarely reaches the monuments; check departures the day before.

Organised day tour from Yerevan

check

Fits Gyumri, Dilijan or Haghpat–Sanahin into one day; compare what is included before booking.
