Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Iberia ↗Plan meals on the Iberian clock: Spanish kitchens serve lunch from about 13:30–14:00 and dinner from 20:30–21:00; Portugal eats an hour or so earlier. Early evenings are for tapas or petiscos, not full meals.
- Iberia ↗Inland Spain and Portugal (Seville, Córdoba, Madrid, the Alentejo) pass 40 °C in heatwaves from late June to August: sightsee before 11:00 and after 18:00, and keep July–August for the coasts and the green north.
- Iberia ↗Andorra and Gibraltar have their own border and customs rules and are reached only through Spain (or France for Andorra); read their pages before adding them, especially if you hold a limited Schengen visa.
- Portugal ↗Portugal is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
- Portugal ↗Alfa Pendular and Intercidades trains assign seats: book Lisbon–Porto ahead in summer and on holiday weekends.
- Portugal ↗Many motorways, including the Algarve's A22, use electronic tolls only: ask the hire company for a transponder before you drive off.
Northern Portugal is Porto plus three separate trips: the Douro Valley east of it, the Minho and its old towns north of it, and the mountain interior along the Spanish border. Porto is the only place with an airport, a metro and enough beds to absorb a short trip. Guimarães and Braga are day-trips from Porto by train; the Douro and Peneda-Gerês are not — both need a car, a tour or a night. Pick Porto plus one of the three, not all three, unless you have a week.

Night sequences
- 3 nights
- Porto 3, Guimarães or Braga as one day-trip
- 5 nights
- Porto 3 + Douro Valley 2 (car or tour, one quinta night)
- 7 nights
- Porto 3 + Douro 2 + Minho 2 (Braga or Viana do Castelo base)
- Porto plus Guimarães plus Braga plus the Douro in 3 days is four half-days of transit.
- Douro quintas are spread along a river valley with weak evening transport; without a car or a booked tour, a day-trip from Porto is mostly a boat or train ride, not vineyard time.
- Peneda-Gerês National Park has no train; buses are few and the roads are slow — go with a car or a tour.
- Atlantic beaches north of Porto are cold and rough outside July–September; lifeguards are seasonal.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guimarães | Porto | 75 min | check | Urban train from São Bento or Campanhã; the castle and centre are a 10–15 min walk from the station. |
| Braga | Porto | 75 min | check | Urban train; Bom Jesus is a bus or taxi up the hill from the centre. |
| Vila Nova de Gaia | Porto | 20 min | unknown | Walk the upper deck of the Luís I bridge; lodge tours book out on weekends. |
| Aveiro | Porto | 70 min | check | Frequent trains; canals and the beach strip are separate walks. |
| Viana do Castelo | Porto | 100 min | check | Train is slower than the motorway; the basilica is a funicular ride up. |
Bags between cities
Left-luggage lockers exist at Porto Campanhã and São Bento; there is no Japan-style hotel-to-hotel luggage forwarding, so plan to carry bags between bases.

Regional food
| Dish | Where | Timing / trap |
|---|---|---|
| Francesinha | Porto | A heavy sandwich under a beer-and-tomato sauce; portions are large, so share one or eat it as a late lunch. |
| Bacalhau (salt cod) | Region-wide | Dozens of named recipes; ask which one before ordering if you want it simple. |
| Caldo verde | Region-wide | Kale and potato soup, usually with a slice of sausage; ask for it without if you want it meat-free. |
| Sardines and grilled fish | Matosinhos, Espinho, Viana do Castelo | Grilled fresh, priced by weight; ask the price per kilo before it goes on the grill. |
| Port wine | Vila Nova de Gaia lodges | Tastings run through the day; book a lodge slot in summer rather than walking in. |
| Vinho verde | Minho, served region-wide | Light, low-alcohol white; the cheap house version is often the right one with fish. |
