The Northwest of Rio Grande do Sul is a mix of Jesuit mission history (São Miguel das Missões), gaucho culture and small industrial towns. Passo Fundo is the transport hub with the only airport; Erechim has a well-preserved Art Deco centre. Both work as a base. The mission ruins are a 1.5–2 h drive from either. Sananduva and Santo Ângelo add local flavour. Distances are short by car; public buses connect the main towns but run infrequently on weekends.
