Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Switzerland ↗Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not the EU: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Switzerland ↗Switzerland is outside the EU customs area: allowances on meat, alcohol and tobacco are strict and checked at borders.
  • Switzerland ↗Motorways need a vignette (sticker or e-vignette) before you drive on them.

This region is Basel plus the Rhine and the Jura foothills around it. The art museums, the old town and the Rhine ferries sit inside one walkable city; the Roman site at Augusta Raurica and the spa town of Rheinfelden are short train rides out. One night covers the city core, two nights let you add a day-trip without rushing. It is a stop on the Zurich–Basel–Germany/France axis, not a mountain region — for Alps, go south.

Night sequences

1 nights
Basel only: old town, one museum, Rhine ferry
2 nights
Basel 2, with Augusta Raurica or Rheinfelden as a half-day
3 nights
Basel 2 + Rheinfelden 1, or a Jura day from Liestal
  • Basel has two main stations: Basel SBB (Swiss/French trains) and Badischer Bahnhof (German trains). Check which one your ticket uses before booking a hotel.
  • Museums and shops often close on Sundays and public holidays; holiday dates differ by canton.
  • This is not an Alpine region — for mountains and cable cars, go to the Bernese Highlands, Valais or Central Switzerland.

Bags between cities

Luggage forwarding (SBB) between Basel and other Swiss cities is usually next-day (D+1); the receiving hotel must accept it. Basel SBB has lockers if you are only passing through.

Basel and the Rhine valley
Warmest corner of Switzerland in summer, with 30 °C (86 °F)+ days in July–August; rain spread through the year. The Jura foothills above Liestal run a few degrees cooler and can hold snow into spring.

May–June and September–October give the best mix of mild weather and manageable crowds. Late February to March is the Basel carnival window — beds and trains fill, book ahead.
