Nouméa is a mornings-on-the-water, afternoons-in-the-shade city: market at 07:00, Place des Cocotiers before the heat, beaches late — and a booked transfer for the 45–60 minute run from La Tontouta.
Nouméa is spread along a peninsula: the centre, the Moselle marina, the Baie des Citrons and Anse Vata are each walkable but 3–7 km apart, and the airport is 50 km away with no rail. The trips that go wrong land on a night flight with no pickup, or count on a bus timetable that has changed since the 2024 unrest. Four clusters cover a first visit; the Isle of Pines and the Loyalty Islands are flights or ferries away from one kept bed.

Etiquette
- Greetings: Say bonjour when you enter a shop, café or lift, and au revoir when you leave; it is a basic courtesy.
- La coutume: Outside the city, ask before you enter tribal land; a small gift such as cloth, tobacco or a note is customary and offered to the chief or host.
- Kanak culture: Do not photograph people without asking; treat sacred objects and sites with respect; dress modestly in villages.
- Beaches: Topless sunbathing is not accepted on tribal beaches; follow swimming notices and lifeguard flags.
- Meals: Lunch is 12:00–14:00 and many kitchens close in the afternoon; dinner starts about 19:00.
- Politics: The future of the territory is a sensitive subject: listen more than you speak, and avoid taking sides.
- Sun: Cover up and use reef-safe sunscreen; do not touch or stand on coral.
