Nuuk

Nuuk is Greenland's capital and a small fjord town: two full days cover the museum, the cathedral, the cultural centre and a boat trip, and the risk is weather, not distance: keep a buffer day before any flight out.

Nuuk has about 20,000 people and one main road, so the town fits in a day on foot and taxi. The trips that go wrong are the weather-dependent ones: a fog or wind day that grounds flights, a boat trip cancelled at short notice, and a museum closed on a Monday. Four small areas cover the town; keep one bed, add a fjord boat trip, and leave a spare day before the way home.

Nuuk Airport (GOH): GOH to Nuuk: one short taxi ride of about 10–15 minutes; the risk is the flight, since fog and wind delay or divert landings, and the airport has few flights a day.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

Greetings: A handshake and a smile; people are reserved but friendly. Learn Aluu and Qujanaq.
Shoes: Take them off in a home.
Photos: Ask before photographing people, especially at the market and in homes.
Hunting culture: Seal, whale, reindeer and musk ox appear on menus. Do not argue about it; respect the practice.
Kaffemik: If invited, accept; bring a small gift and take a slice of cake.
Dogs: Do not approach or feed sled dogs.
Language: Greeting someone in Greenlandic first is warmly received; switch to English after.

Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) is the official language; ask before switching to English or Danish.
Ask before photographing people and before approaching sled dogs.
Respect hunting culture: seal and whale meat appear on menus.

Scams and watch-outs

Souvenirs made from protected animals (walrus ivory, whale, seal) may need export permits, and many countries ban their import: ask for the paperwork or buy something else.
Unlicensed boat or tour offers from private people at the harbour: use a booked operator with a safety plan; ice and weather change quickly.
Taxi quotes for a short ride with no set price: agree the fare before you set off, or ask your hotel.
Online rentals and tours advertised at odd prices: confirm through the operator's own site or the tourist office.
