How to build the trip, step by step

Step 1: fix your dates. The northern loop works from November to March. If you are coming in July or August, either go to Salalah for the khareef or accept 40 °C-plus days in Muscat and drive early. Check the best time to visit Oman before booking flights.

Step 2: start in Muscat. Three nights covers the Grand Mosque, Muttrah Souq and Corniche, Old Muscat and one wadi or fort day trip. Most trips begin and end here because it is the air hub.

Step 3: hire a car from day 2 or 3 and drive to Nizwa, about 1.5–2 hours on good roads. Two nights lets you see the fort and souq, the Friday goat market, and Bahla and Jabreen as a half-day.

Step 4: add one mountain night. Jebel Akhdar is the easier, greener option with terraced villages; Jebel Shams has the canyon rim and the balcony walk. Both are cool at night and both need a 4x4 for the final climb (check road rules and rental terms).

Step 5: drop into the desert. One night at a Wahiba Sands camp is the standard. Camps usually arrange a pickup from the road if you do not want to drive on sand.

Step 6: run down the coast. Sur for the dhow yards, then a night visit to Ras al Jinz for turtles, then Wadi Shab or Wadi Bani Khalid on the way back to Muscat.

Step 7: decide on the far corners. Salalah is a flight from Muscat, not a day trip, and deserves 3–4 nights. Khasab in Musandam is a separate flight or a road route through the UAE; 1–2 nights for a dhow cruise in the fjords.

If you have only 5 days, do Muscat, Nizwa and one mountain or desert night, and leave the rest. If you have 10 days, the full loop with a mountain night fits comfortably. See the Oman itinerary page for day-by-day routes.

Notes before you go

Distances look short on the map but mountain roads are slow. Drive in daylight and avoid arriving at a desert camp after dark.

A 4x4 is required for Jebel Akhdar and recommended for Jebel Shams and the sands; check your rental agreement covers mountain and gravel roads (check).

Ras al Jinz turtle visits are guided and run at fixed times, usually early morning and evening; book ahead in winter (check).

Salalah in the khareef (June–September) is green and misty, which is the opposite of the rest of Oman in those months. Winter there is for beaches and frankincense sites.

Musandam is separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE. Check your visa and border situation before booking a road route (check).

Summer heat in the interior is serious: plan indoor or early-morning sightseeing, carry water, and treat long drives as a risk.

Costs vary widely by season and by whether you camp or stay in hotels; see Oman travel costs and daily budget for bands.

Travel insurance that covers driving, hiking and any water activity is worth arranging before you leave.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are the best places to visit in Oman?

Muscat for 3 nights, Nizwa for 2, then one mountain night (Jebel Akhdar or Jebel Shams), one night in Wahiba Sands, and Sur with Ras al Jinz. Salalah and Musandam are the two best add-ons if you have more time.

How many days do you need in Oman?

Five days is the useful minimum: Muscat, Nizwa and one mountain or desert night. Ten days covers the full northern loop with a mountain night. Add 3–4 nights if you fly to Salalah, or 1–2 for Khasab.

Which areas of Oman suit a first visit?

The north: Muscat, the interior around Nizwa, the Hajar mountains, Wahiba Sands and the east coast to Sur. It has the shortest drives, the widest choice of hotels and the best weather from November to March.

Do I need a car in Oman?

For the interior loop, yes. Roads between Muscat, Nizwa and Sur are good, but a 4x4 is needed for Jebel Akhdar and recommended for Jebel Shams and the sands. Camps can pick you up from the road.

When is the best time to visit Oman?

November to March for the north, when days are warm and nights cool. The mountains are also good in March–May and September–November. Salalah is best October–March for beaches, or July–August for the khareef.

Is Salalah worth the extra flight?

Yes if you have 3–4 spare nights and the season fits: green hills and mist in the khareef, or warm beaches and frankincense sites in winter. It is not a day trip from Muscat.
