Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Upper Town: Fort Oranje & the ruins audio walk in Oranjestad. 3 stops: Fort Oranje, Honen Dalim synagogue ruins and Historical Foundation museum. Morning cluster: the fort on the cliff, the synagogue ruins and the church ruins before the heat; short, steep lanes.

Fort Oranje, the synagogue and church ruins and the museum (approximate box). Underfoot: uneven paving and grass; slope: steep; shade: some.

Sint Eustatius, known as Statia, is a small Dutch Caribbean island with one town, one volcano and a large share of Atlantic history. In the 1700s it was a free port and a warehouse for the Caribbean; today it is a quiet place for divers, hikers and history readers.

Before you start: The ruins are protected: stay on paths and do not climb walls. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Fort Oranje

Stop 1 of 3: Fort Oranje. Arrival point: Walk or car to the fort gate.

Go in the morning: the fort has cannons on a cliff over the bay, little shade and a view of the Lower Town and neighbouring islands. On a first visit: The clearest view of the bay, and the 1776 story in one stop.

A plaque at Fort Oranje tells the story. The Upper Town sits on the cliff above the bay and holds most of what is left of the old settlement: Fort Oranje, the Honen Dalim synagogue ruins, the ruins of the Dutch Reformed Church, the Historical Foundation museum and most of the guesthouses. Fort Oranje is the first stop for most visitors.

Do not climb on the cannon or the walls. Quiet; a small group of visitors at most. Allowed outdoors. The fort stands on the cliff above the Lower Town. From the Upper Town it is a short flat walk; from the bay it is a steep climb, so take a taxi up if it is hot.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Honen Dalim synagogue ruins. It's about 2 minutes on foot, about 200 metres to the east. Route: Walk (little shade). The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Honen Dalim synagogue ruins

    Honen Dalim

Stop 2 of 3: Honen Dalim synagogue ruins. Locally, Honen Dalim. Arrival point: Walk from Fort Oranje or the Upper Town lanes.

Go in the morning: roofless walls and a tower from the 1730s, a short flat walk from the fort, free, and 15 to 20 minutes is enough.

The Honen Dalim synagogue is a short walk away. How old is it? The synagogue dates from about 1739.

Do not climb the walls or remove bricks. Quiet; a few visitors at most. Allowed. Built about 1739 and named Honen Dalim ("He who is merciful"), it is among the oldest synagogue sites in the Americas. In the 1700s a large share of the island trade was Jewish-run, and this was the centre of that community. The building was abandoned after the island was sacked in 1781. Only walls, a tower and a few architectural details remain. Read the panel or bring a guide to picture the interior.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Historical Foundation museum. It's about 2 minutes on foot, about 200 metres to the south. Route: Walk (little shade). The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Historical Foundation museum

    Sint Eustatius Historical Foundation museum

Stop 3 of 3: Historical Foundation museum. Locally, Sint Eustatius Historical Foundation museum. Arrival point: Walk from the Upper Town lanes.

Go in mid-morning or in rain: an old merchant house with displays on trade, slavery and daily life, about 45 minutes, small entry fee, hours limited to weekdays (check).

The Historical Foundation museum treats this part of the story directly, and it is worth reading before you look at the ruins so that you see what they were built with. The Historical Foundation museum is in an 18th-century house nearby, and it is the best short account on the island.

Ask before photographing objects; some displays may not allow it. Quiet; a few visitors at a time. Ask at the desk. The museum is in an 18th-century house in the Upper Town. It tells the trade story of the "Golden Rock", from the 1700s through the capture by British forces in 1781.

That's the end of the Upper Town: Fort Oranje & the ruins walk. To carry on, Lower Town: Oranje Bay & the waterfront is about 6 minutes away (walk or short car down the hill). To carry on, The Quill trailhead & crater is about 8 minutes away (car east).
