- Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
- Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
- Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
- Guatemala ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Guatemala's Migration Institute or a Guatemalan consulate. Guatemala shares a Central America border agreement (CA-4) with El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua, so your permitted stay may count across all four.
- Guatemala ↗Hike volcanoes (Acatenango, Pacaya) only with registered guides and check eruption alerts; Fuego is highly active.
- Guatemala ↗Avoid public chicken buses between cities: they are frequent targets of robbery. Use tourist shuttles or private transport.
The Pacific Lowlands is Guatemala's hot, flat coastal strip: black-sand beaches, mangrove canals, the IRTRA theme parks at Retalhuleu, and pre-Columbian sculpture sites. It is a 2–3 night add-on from Antigua or Lake Atitlán, not a base. The CA2 highway is the spine and it jams; pick one beach and one inland stop rather than trying to see the whole coast.

- 2 nights
- Monterrico 2 nights (beach + mangrove boat), return to Antigua
- 3 nights
- Monterrico 2 + Retalhuleu 1 (IRTRA parks or Takalik Abaj), then up to Quetzaltenango
- CA2 between Coatepeque and Escuintla can hold you for 2 hours at a time — usually sugar-cane lorry accidents. Build slack into any transfer day.
- Rip currents and undertow drown swimmers on Pacific beaches every year, including strong swimmers.
- Opportunistic theft is common; do not walk the beaches alone after dark.
Day-trips door to door
| To | From | Door-to-door p50 | Last return | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monterrico | Antigua Guatemala | 150 min | unknown | Shuttle is the usual option; the road drops through Escuintla. Go early to miss the sugar-lorry traffic. |
| Retalhuleu | Antigua Guatemala | 210 min | unknown | Long day; better as an overnight if you want the IRTRA parks. |
| Takalik Abaj | Retalhuleu | 45 min | unknown | Archaeological park in the foothills; check opening days before you go. |
| Puerto San José | Guatemala City | 120 min | unknown | Closest coast to the capital; weekend traffic both ways. |
Bags between cities
No useful luggage forwarding on the coast; carry bags or leave them at your Antigua hotel.

- Pacific plain and coast
- Hot year-round; rainy season May–October brings afternoon downpours and heavy lightning. The plain is hotter and stickier than Antigua.
- Sierra Madre foothills
- Cooler than the coast, wetter in the same months; cloud sits on the ridge in the afternoons.
Dry season (November–April) is the practical window: firmer roads, less mud, and beaches that are not being rained on. Easter week fills the coast with Guatemalan holidaymakers.
