Palencia
Give Palencia one night, or a half-day stop between Valladolid and León: the cathedral, Calle Mayor and the archaeology museum fill 4–5 hours.
Palencia is a small Castilian city on the Madrid–León rail line, 90 min from Madrid and about 30 min from Valladolid. Its draw is one flamboyant Gothic cathedral, a colonnaded main street and a cheap archaeology museum. It is a half-day or one-night stop, not a base: most travellers pass through on the way to León, Burgos or the Canal de Castilla.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Two kisses on the cheek (right then left) between friends and when introduced socially; handshake in business; avoid: Being stiff — Spaniards stand close and touch arms
- Meal times: Late lunch and dinner; long sobremesa (chat after eating); avoid: Rushing to leave or asking for the bill with the last bite
- Noise: Join in the lively conversation; avoid: Reading loud voices as anger
- Siesta hours: Keep noise down in residential buildings 15:00–17:00 and after 23:00; avoid: Phone calls to people at lunch time
- Dress: Smart casual in cities; locals rarely wear shorts in Madrid in town; avoid: Swimwear or bare torsos away from the beach
- Regional pride: Ask about local dishes and festivals; avoid: Assuming Catalan or Basque are dialects of Spanish
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter is cold and spring nights are cold at 750 m; it can rain in any month.
- Many churches and museums close for a long midday break and shut one day a week: check hours before you walk out.
- The tourist office at Calle Mayor 31 has been reported closed: check before relying on it.
- Some restaurant and bar websites listed in older guides are dead links: call ahead if you are booking.
A calm, low-crime small city; the real risks are cold winter nights, uneven old-town pavements and long midday closures, not street crime.
