Papeete
Papeete is a morning-and-evening town: do the market and the cathedral early, rest indoors at midday, eat at the food trucks after 18:00 — and keep the ferry to Moorea for the next morning.
Papeete is the only real town on Tahiti and a base for a night or two, not a week. Everything a first visit needs is inside one square kilometre on the harbour, and most long-haul flights land at night, so the first bed matters more than the sights. Four small clusters cover it; Moorea, the lagoon and the other islands are the reason you came.

- Greetings: Say Ia orana or Bonjour when you enter a shop or stall; a smile and a greeting go a long way.
- Churches: Cover shoulders and knees; be quiet, and do not photograph worship.
- Sunday: Sunday is a family and church day; shops are shut and hymn singing carries from churches. Visit quietly.
- Photography: Ask before photographing people, especially at church and in the market.
- Dress in town: Beachwear is for the beach: put a shirt or pareo on for shops and restaurants.
- Sacred sites: Old marae (temple platforms) are sacred: do not climb on them or take stones.
- Tipping: Not expected; a smile and thanks are enough.
