Where to stay in Papua New Guinea: best areas and types of hotel

There is no single best area: stay one night in Port Moresby near the airport or Waigani, then sleep inside a lodge or guesthouse at each region you fly to — Highlands, Tufi, Kimbe Bay, Sepik or Rabaul. Book through a local operator or lodge, months ahead for show dates, and never plan on road links between regions.

Quick answer

Treat accommodation as part of the itinerary, not a separate booking. Almost every first trip is a chain of flights: one or two nights in Port Moresby, then five to seven nights in one or two regions, each with its own lodge, guesthouse or resort. You sleep where the operator sleeps you.

If you want one rule: pick the region first, then the property inside it. Port Moresby is a transit base, not a holiday base. The Highlands, Tufi, Kimbe Bay, the Sepik and Rabaul each have a small number of places that work for visitors, and they fill up around show dates and the September–December dive season.

Prices below are 2026 estimates in kina (PGK). Show dates and the Sepik and dive seasons push rates up and sell out rooms; the wet months in some regions close smaller places entirely. Confirm with the property before you pay a deposit.

Step by step

1. Choose the regions you are actually visiting. Two is plenty for a first trip. Three means a lot of airport time.

2. Ask your operator or lodge which property they use, and whether they hold rooms. In most regions the operator books the bed as part of the package, and going around them rarely saves money.

3. Book the Port Moresby night for the day you land, even if you fly out the next morning. Delayed domestic flights are common, and a hotel near Jacksons airport or in Waigani keeps the transfer short.

4. For show dates, book three to six months out. Goroka in September and Mount Hagen in August are the two weeks when the whole country's rooms are tight.

5. Pay attention to what is included. Lodges and dive resorts usually quote full board because there is nowhere else to eat; town hotels quote room only.

6. Carry cash. City hotels take cards; guesthouses, village stays and small operators often want kina, and there may be no ATM in the region.

7. Re-check security advice for your dates before you pay. It changes, and it can change which part of a town you want to sleep in.

  • Book the region before the room.
  • One Port Moresby night on arrival, near the airport or Waigani.
  • Show dates: three to six months ahead.
  • Assume full board at lodges and dive resorts.
  • Cash for anything outside a city hotel.

Notes

Do not plan on driving between regions. The parent country guidance is explicit: fly, and treat overland travel as something for experienced visitors only. That shapes where you stay, because a property is only useful if it is near the airstrip or the boat your operator uses.

Port Moresby has the widest choice and the highest prices. Waigani suits the museum and parliament; the airport side suits an early flight. Ask your hotel about transfers rather than walking or using public transport after dark.

Outside the cities, the split is roughly three ways: town hotels in Goroka, Mount Hagen, Kokopo and Alotau; dedicated lodges and dive resorts at Tufi, Kimbe Bay, the Sepik and near the Highlands; and guesthouses or village stays, which are the cheapest and the most variable. Village stays are usually arranged through an operator, not booked directly.

Check the practical pages before you commit: travel to Papua New Guinea, visa requirements, health and vaccines, money and tipping, and a sim or eSIM for coverage. Travel insurance that covers domestic flight disruption and medical evacuation is worth arranging early, because regional clinics are limited.

If your dates are flexible, the best time to visit page explains the dry-season pattern that decides which lodges are open at all.

Questions people ask

Where is the best area to stay in Papua New Guinea?

There is no single best area. Spend one night in Port Moresby near the airport or Waigani, then stay inside the region you came for — Highlands, Tufi, Kimbe Bay, the Sepik or Rabaul — at a lodge, resort or guesthouse your operator uses.

How much does a hotel cost in Papua New Guinea?

2026 estimates: K400–900 a night for a Port Moresby hotel, K250–600 in regional towns, K700–1,500 for a lodge or dive resort (often full board), and K80–250 for a guesthouse or village stay. Cards work in city hotels; carry kina elsewhere.

When should I book accommodation in Papua New Guinea?

Three to six months ahead for Goroka in September or Mount Hagen in August, when show dates fill the country's rooms. Otherwise one to three months is usually enough, but confirm before you pay a deposit.

Can I book a lodge directly instead of through an operator?

Sometimes, but in most regions the operator holds the rooms and includes the bed in the package. Booking around them rarely saves money and can leave you without transfers or meals.

Should I stay in Port Moresby for my whole trip?

No. Port Moresby is a transit base for a night or two. The reason people fly to Papua New Guinea — Highlands culture, reefs, the Sepik, war history — is in the regions, and each has its own small set of places to stay.

Is there anywhere cheap to stay?

Guesthouses and village stays run K80–250 a night with shared facilities, usually arranged through an operator rather than booked online. They are the cheapest option and the most variable in comfort.
