Step by step: how to pick your dates
Start with the region, not the month. Luzon and Manila are dry and cooler from December to February, hottest in April and May, and hit by typhoons and floods from July to October. The Visayas, which covers Cebu, Bohol, Boracay, Siquijor and Negros, is dry from January to May, with late typhoons possible from October to December and Boracay's west beach calm from November to May. Palawan is best from January to April; the southwest monsoon from June to October makes island hopping rough, and Coron is more sheltered than El Nido. Northern Mindanao and Siargao sit mostly outside the typhoon belt, with Siargao wettest from November to February and best for surf from September to November.
Then check the calendar. Sinulog in Cebu and Ati-Atihan in Kalibo fall on the third Sunday of January and sell out hotels. Holy Week, which moves between March and April, stops much of the country for Maundy Thursday to Easter and pushes beaches and flights to peak. All Saints and All Souls on 1–2 November send families to cemeteries and sell out transport. The Christmas season runs from September to early January, with traffic peaking in December.
Then decide what you will trade. If your trip is built on boats, lagoons and diving, take January to April and accept higher prices. If you want low prices and can absorb a washed-out day or two, June and November are the shoulders, and the wet months are cheapest. If you are chasing surf on Siargao, aim for September to November. If you are visiting family or joining a festival, the date is fixed and you plan around it.
Finally, protect the plan. In typhoon season, book flexible fares and refundable rooms, keep a buffer day before any international flight, and check the weather forecast and coast guard advisories before every ferry. Domestic flights and boats are the first things cancelled.
Notes and caveats
The Philippines has a tropical climate with a dry season roughly December to May and a wet season June to November, but the country sits across several weather systems, so a dry week in Palawan can coincide with rain in Siargao. Typhoons can strike from June to December and occasionally outside that window; the northern islands and the eastern Visayas take the most hits.
Prices and crowds follow the school calendar and the festivals more than the weather. Christmas, New Year, Holy Week and the January festivals are the most expensive and busiest times; June to October is generally the cheapest, with the trade-off of rain and cancelled boats.
