- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
- Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
- Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
- Serbia ↗Serbia is outside the EU and Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport.
- Serbia ↗Foreign visitors must be registered with the police after arrival; hotels do it, but in private rentals ask your host to confirm.
- Serbia ↗Serbia does not accept entry into Kosovo from a third country as entry into Serbia. If you plan to cross between Kosovo and Serbia, check your government's advice for both before you book.
Podunavlje is the Danube strip east of Belgrade: Roman ruins at Viminacium, a fortress at Golubac, and the Đerdap gorge road. Sights sit 20–60 km apart with thin public transport, so a car turns three scattered stops into one clean loop. Without a car, take a tour or skip it.

- 2 nights
- Night 1 Požarevac (Viminacium), night 2 Donji Milanovac (Đerdap, Lepenski Vir)
- 3 nights
- Add a night near Sokobanja for Gamzigrad, then exit south or back to Belgrade
- Public buses along the gorge are sparse and slow; do not plan a tight connection.
- The Đerdap road has tunnels and narrow sections; drive it in daylight.
Day-trips door to door

| Viminacium | Požarevac | 20 min | unknown | Roman city and military camp; allow 2–3 hours on site. |

| Lepenski Vir | Donji Milanovac | 30 min | unknown | Neolithic site on the Danube bank; check opening hours before driving out. |

Get in
| From | To | How | p50 | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Belgrade | Požarevac | Car or bus on the M4/E75 corridor | ~1 h 30 by car | The usual gateway; buses run but are slower than driving. |
| Belgrade | Golubac / Đerdap | Car via the Danube road | ~2 h 10 | No convenient rail; a car or an organised tour is the realistic option. |
| Niš | Požarevac | Car on the E75 | ~2 h 30 | Links the southern route to the Danube strip. |
Regional passes

checkTolls are paid per section at booths; a tag only helps if you drive several Serbian motorways.
Guided Đerdap day tour
checkWorth pricing if you have no car; it removes the driving and the gorge-road stress.
