Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Slovenia ↗Slovenia is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Slovenia ↗Motorways and expressways need an electronic vignette (e-vinjeta) bought before you drive on them.
  • Slovenia ↗Triglav National Park has rules on parking, camping and drones; follow the signs and do not wild camp.

Pohorje-Savinjska covers three different landscapes: the Pohorje plateau above Maribor, the Zasavje hills along the Sava, and the Savinja valley running up to the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. They are 40–90 minutes apart by road and poorly linked by public transport. Pick one base, hire a car, and treat the rest as day-trips. Skiers and hikers sleep on the Pohorje side; anyone arriving by train sleeps in Celje or Slovenj Gradec.

  • Trying to see Pohorje, the Zasavje hills and the Savinja valley in two days is three hours of driving and little walking.
  • Mountain roads to the ridge and to Uršlja gora are narrow and unlit; avoid them after dark in winter.

Pohorje plateau
Cooler and wetter than the valleys; snow cover on the ridge typically December to March, and the ski season depends on it.
Savinja valley and Celje basin
Valley heat in July and August; afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer.

May, June and September are the best walking months. Late spring and early autumn are quiet; July and August bring the crowds to the ridge and the valley spas.

Slovenian e-vignette

buy

Required for the A1 and expressways; a weekly vignette is the usual choice for a short trip.

Pohorje ski pass

Day and multi-day passes exist for the Maribor Pohorje lifts; prices and open lifts change with snow, so check before you commit.

Regional bus tickets

check

Cheap but sparse on Sundays and outside school terms; only useful for the valley towns, not the ridge.
