Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovin…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Balkans ↗Mine-suspected land still exists in Bosnia and Herzegovina and in pockets of Croatia's former front line: outside towns keep to tarmac and waymarked paths, and treat red triangle signs and taped-off fields as absolute.
  • Balkans ↗Serbia refuses onward entry to travellers who reached Kosovo from a third country and then try to cross straight into Serbia; route Kosovo–Serbia legs through North Macedonia or Montenegro, or start the loop in Serbia.
  • Balkans ↗Hire cars need written permission from the rental company and valid insurance for every country on the line; Kosovo sells its own border insurance and some contracts exclude Albania, Kosovo or Bosnia outright.
  • North Macedonia ↗North Macedonia is outside the EU and Schengen area and sets its own entry rules; check the official requirements for your passport.
  • North Macedonia ↗Foreign visitors must be registered with the police within a short time of arrival; hotels do it for you, but in private rentals ask your host to confirm.
  • North Macedonia ↗Lake Ohrid is a protected UNESCO area: follow rules on boats, swimming zones and litter.

Povardarie is the Vardar corridor: Skopje at the north end, then Veles, Negotino, Demir Kapija and Kavadarci down the motorway toward Greece. Trains and buses run along the same line, so you can sleep once in Skopje and still reach the wine country, or break the trip south with one night in Kavadarci. The region is not a resort: it is a working valley of vineyards, a Roman city and a gorge, best used as a moving base rather than a single destination.

  • Doing Skopje, Veles, Stobi and Kavadarci in one day is four hours in transit for three short stops.
  • Wine tasting without a designated driver is the main risk in Tikveš; book a driver or sleep in Kavadarci.

Bags between cities

No luggage-forwarding habit here; carry bags or leave them at the Skopje hotel and travel light for a Kavadarci night.

Vardar valley
Continental valley: July and August often pass 35 °C (95 °F), and the wind that gives Veles its name blows hardest in winter and spring. May, June, September and October are the comfortable months.

September is harvest in Tikveš, so winery visits are busiest and most interesting; spring is greener in the gorge but wetter.
