Everything the tour says, in order. Read it instead of listening if you prefer.

  1. Before you start

Welcome to the Plateau (old centre) audio walk in Praia. 4 stops: Museu Etnográfico da Praia, Praça Alexandre Albuquerque, Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graça and Sucupira market. Morning cluster: the main square, the ethnographic museum and the Sucupira market on the flat-topped rise, before 11:00.

The Plateau streets from the Praça Alexandre Albuquerque north to the Sucupira market (approximate box). Underfoot: cobbles and paving; slope: flat on top, steep at the edges; shade: mixed.

Praia is a small Atlantic capital built on a flat-topped rise on the south coast of Santiago, the island where Cabo Verde's colonial story began.

Before you start: Do not photograph the presidential palace or the police. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.

  2. 1. Museu Etnográfico da Praia

    Museu Etnográfico

Stop 1 of 4: Museu Etnográfico da Praia. Locally, Museu Etnográfico. Arrival point: Walk from the main square.

The city's ethnographic museum on the Plateau: an hour in the morning; ask your hotel to phone ahead, as opening days and hours are not verified.

The Plateau, or Platô, is the old centre: a flat rise with the main square, the cathedral, the ministries and the museum, where the streets run in a rough grid and the buildings are low.

Ask before photographing exhibits and staff. Quiet; school groups on some mornings. Shoes on.

Walk:Next, stop 2: Praça Alexandre Albuquerque. It's about 6 minutes on foot. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  3. 2. Praça Alexandre Albuquerque

Stop 2 of 4: Praça Alexandre Albuquerque. Arrival point: Walk or taxi to the square.

The Plateau's main square, ringed by the old town hall, a church and cafés: twenty minutes, or longer with a coffee, before the sun gets high.

Ask before photographing people. Quiet in the morning; busier at lunch and on weekend evenings. Do not photograph the presidential palace nearby.

Walk:Next, stop 3: Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graça. It's about 3 minutes on foot. Route: Walk across the square. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  4. 3. Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graça

Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Graça

Stop 3 of 4: Cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graça. Locally, Catedral de Nossa Senhora da Graça. Arrival point: Walk across the main square (Praça Alexandre Albuquerque).

The city's main church, on the edge of the Plateau square: a 15–20 minute quiet stop in the morning, dressed with shoulders and knees covered.

The cathedral of Nossa Senhora da Graça stands on the edge of the square and gives it a focus, and the ministries and the presidential residence nearby carry the look of administrative buildings from the later colonial period.

Cover shoulders and knees; no flash and no photographing worshippers during services. Quiet on weekday mornings; busier at Sunday services. Shoulders and knees covered. The church stands on the Plateau square, so it combines with the square walk in the same 30 minutes. Mass times change; ask your hotel or a passer-by, or pass by on a weekday morning. Dress covered even for a look inside.

Walk:Next, stop 4: Sucupira market. We have no walking time for this leg yet, so check your map. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.

  5. 4. Sucupira market

    Mercado de Sucupira

Stop 4 of 4: Sucupira market. Locally, Mercado de Sucupira. Arrival point: Walk from the Plateau or taxi to the market.

The city's big open market: go in the morning with small notes and a day pack, and keep phones out of sight; it is busy and loud.

The Sucupira market, on the edge of the Plateau, is the place where these worlds meet: farmers and traders from across Santiago, cloth and household goods, fish, fruit and the smell of frying.

Pickpockets work the market: keep phones and cash out of sight. Crowded from mid-morning; quietest before 09:00. Ask before photographing stall owners.

  6. End of the walk

That's the end of the Plateau (old centre) walk. To carry on, Prainha beach is about 10 minutes away (taxi south). To carry on, Palmarejo (waterfront, restaurants) is about 12 minutes away (taxi west).
