Punalur is a small Kerala town on the Kallada River, 45 km northeast of Kollam and 75 km north of Thiruvananthapuram, on the Kollam–Shencotta rail line and the Main Eastern Highway (SH-08) and NH-208. The draw is what sits around it: the 1877 suspension bridge in town, Palaruvi Falls near Aryankavu, and Thenmala ecotourism along the Kallada. It works as a half-day stop or a quiet one-night base.

Local taxis and autorickshaws cover the town; the centre is walkable. KSRTC buses run to Adoor, Pathanamthitta and Kottarakara, all connected onward across Kerala.

Etiquette, safety and scams

Etiquette

Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers
Hands and feet: Give and eat with the right hand; apologise if your foot touches someone; avoid: Pointing feet at people or shrines; touching books or food with your feet
Temples: Shoes off, walk clockwise around shrines, accept prasad (blessed food) with the right hand; avoid: Leather in Jain temples; entering sanctums that say Hindus only
Home visit: Bring sweets or fruit; accept tea at least once; avoid: Refusing all food; wearing shoes inside

Scams and watch-outs

Train services on the Kollam–Shencotta line are limited: check the timetable before you plan around a train.
Roads to the waterfalls turn slippery in the monsoon; skip the trekking at Jetayu Para in heavy rain.

Generally safe for tourists. The real risks are wet, winding roads in the monsoon and unlit stretches after dark; agree autorickshaw fares before you get in.
