Purba Bardhaman is the fertile eastern half of the former Bardhaman district, known for its terracotta temples, sweet shops and riverine towns. Bardhaman town has the best transport and accommodation; Ambika Kalna's 108 Shiva temples, Katwa's confluence and Memari's rural temples are easy day-trips. The district is flat, hot and crowded — plan for early starts and afternoon rests.
