Rundu
One night in Rundu is enough: markets, woodcarvings and a river stopover before the Caprivi Strip. Timing: check.
Rundu is Namibia's second-largest city and the main town of Kavango, sitting on a hill on the south bank of the Okavango, the border river to Angola. It is a frontier trading town with market halls, street markets and Kavango woodcarvers, and works as a one-night stop before the wilder Kavango and Caprivi bush.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Greet and ask 'how are you' before any question; avoid: Straight to business
- Village visits: Go with a guide and ask permission; avoid: Photographing without asking
- Roads: Wave at passing drivers on quiet gravel; stop for anyone in trouble; avoid: Speeding through villages
- Lodges: Follow staff instructions about walking at night; avoid: Leaving your room after dark in unfenced lodges without an escort
- Language: English or a few words of Afrikaans or Oshiwambo; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks German
Scams and watch-outs
- Crocodiles and snakes are on the riverbanks; keep a safe distance.
- Shared minibuses and taxis leave only when full: check departure times.
- Most Western passports need a Namibian visa since April 2025: apply for e-visa pre-approval or pay N$1,600 on arrival.
Rundu is described as a safe place for travellers and a practical one-night stop before the Kavango and Caprivi bush; the real risks are river wildlife and shared transport that leaves only when full.
