Where to stay in Rwanda: best areas and types of hotel

Base in Kigali (2 nights) for the memorial, markets and food, then stay in Musanze for Volcanoes National Park gorilla trekking, and add Akagera, Nyungwe or Lake Kivu if you have a week. Book gorilla-trek nights first: permits sell out and lodges near the park fill in Jun–Sep and Dec–Feb.

Quick answer

Stay in Kigali for your first two nights, then move to the park you came for. Musanze is the base for Volcanoes National Park and gorilla trekking, Akagera for savanna wildlife, Nyungwe for chimpanzees and the canopy walk, and Lake Kivu for a slow finish. Most travellers book two or three bases, not one.

The single decision that changes everything is the gorilla permit. Fix the trek date first, then book a lodge near the park gate; everything else can stay flexible.

Where to stay, area by area

Kigali: the city centre around the convention area and Kiyovu has the widest hotel range and the easiest taxis; quieter neighbourhoods such as Kimihurura and Kacyiru suit longer stays and have good restaurants. The airport is 15–20 minutes from the centre. Two nights covers the Genocide Memorial, a market and a meal out.

Musanze: the town sits about 2.5 hours from Kigali and 20–40 minutes from the Volcanoes National Park briefing point. Lodges range from simple guesthouses in town to high-end properties on the slopes. Staying close to the gate cuts the early start on trek day.

Akagera: sleep inside the park for dawn game drives, or in Kayonza just outside for lower rates. Nyungwe: lodges cluster near the forest edge and the canopy walk, with few options once you leave the main road. Lake Kivu: Rubavu (Gisenyi) in the north is closest to Volcanoes; Karongi (Kibuye) is central and quieter.

  • Kigali — city nights, airport access, restaurants
  • Musanze — gorilla trekking base
  • Akagera — savanna, dawn drives
  • Nyungwe — chimpanzees, canopy walk
  • Lake Kivu — rest days, lakeside towns

Types of accommodation and what they cost

Rwanda's range is wide. Guesthouses and hostels in Kigali and Musanze start low; mid-range hotels with reliable hot water and Wi-Fi sit in the middle; park lodges and boutique city hotels at the top. Prices are 2026 estimates and swing hard in high season.

Check what is included before booking: many park-area rates include meals, and some include park transfers, which changes the real cost. Outside Kigali, card machines are less common, so carry cash for smaller guesthouses.

When to book

Book the gorilla trek and the lodge near the park first, because both are limited. In the dry seasons (Jun–Sep and Dec–Feb) the good park lodges fill two to four months ahead; the rest of the year you have more room, but weekends and holidays still tighten supply.

Kigali hotels are easier: one to two weeks ahead is usually enough, and there is always a fallback in the city. If your trip depends on one specific lodge, book it as soon as your trek date is confirmed.

Practical notes

Power is 230 V with type C and J plugs, so bring an adapter. Wi-Fi is common in city hotels and patchy at park lodges; a local data plan is a useful backup. Tipping is not expected in town but is customary for guides, trackers and porters.

Payments: the Rwandan franc is the local currency, about 1,400–1,500 per US$. Larger hotels take cards; smaller guesthouses and park extras often prefer cash. Driving is on the right, unlike Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, which matters if you rent a car.

  • Bring a type C or J adapter
  • Carry cash for small guesthouses
  • Confirm whether meals and park transfers are included
  • Check cancellation terms before paying a deposit

Questions people ask

Where is the best area to stay in Rwanda?

Kigali for your first two nights, then Musanze for Volcanoes National Park and gorilla trekking. Add Akagera for savanna, Nyungwe for chimpanzees, or Lake Kivu for rest. Most trips use two or three bases rather than one.

How much does a hotel cost in Rwanda?

Guesthouses and hostels run about US$25–60 per night, mid-range hotels US$70–180, and park lodges US$200–600 or more (2026 estimates). Park rates often include meals, so check inclusions before comparing.

When should I book accommodation in Rwanda?

Book the gorilla trek and the lodge near the park first: in Jun–Sep and Dec–Feb the good lodges fill two to four months ahead. Kigali hotels are usually fine one to two weeks out.

Should I stay inside Akagera or outside the park?

Inside gives you dawn game drives without a gate run and is the better choice if wildlife is the point of the stop. Staying in Kayonza just outside costs less but adds drive time each morning.

Is it worth staying at Lake Kivu?

Yes if you want a slow day between parks. Rubavu (Gisenyi) is closest to Volcanoes; Karongi (Kibuye) is quieter and more central on the lake. One or two nights is enough.

Do hotels in Rwanda take cards?

Larger city hotels and park lodges usually do. Smaller guesthouses and park extras often prefer cash in Rwandan francs, so carry some even if you plan to pay by card.
