Saltburn-by-the-Sea

Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a small Victorian resort on the North Yorkshire coast, 12 miles east of Middlesbrough. A grid of 1860s streets sits above a sandy beach, a 208 m pier and a water-powered cliff tramway. The town itself is compact and walkable; the coast path, Staithes and the North York Moors are the reasons to stay longer.

Get around

The town is small enough to walk: station to pier is about 10 min downhill, and the cliff tramway saves the climb back up (Mar–Oct, daily 10:30–18:00, adult £2). Trains run about every 30 min to Middlesbrough (25 min) via Redcar; Arriva X4 buses run every 30 min to Middlesbrough (50 min) and on to Loftus and Whitby.
