San José
San José is a one- or two-day city: do the museums and the market before 13:00, before the daily rain, take a booked car after dark, and move on to a volcano or a coast the next morning.
San José is the arrival hub, not the reason to come: the sights are small and close together downtown, the weather turns wet after midday in the green season, and the streets empty at night. The trips that go wrong stay for four nights or walk downtown after dark. Four clusters cover a good first day: the downtown museums and market, Barrio Amón for a quiet bed, Barrio Escalante for dinner, and La Sabana park for a museum and a soda.

Walk inside a cluster by day; use a ride-hail app or a booked car between clusters and always after dark. There is no metro, and buses are cheap but hard for a first visit.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greetings: Say buenos días or buenas tardes when you enter a shop, soda or taxi; skipping it reads as cold.
- Pura vida: The national phrase means hello, thanks, all good and goodbye. Use it freely.
- Queueing: Queues are generally respected in banks and museums; buses fill by whoever pushes first.
- Photos: Ask before photographing market vendors, and avoid photographing police or the airport.
- Dress: Casual is fine. Cover shoulders and knees for churches; a light jacket helps in cool evenings.
- Paying: Menu prices exclude 13% tax and 10% service; the bill total can be 23% above the listed price.
- Toilet paper: Where a sign asks for used paper in the bin, follow it: older plumbing blocks easily.
Red lines
- Ask before photographing people, especially market vendors.
- Cross at lights and crosswalks: drivers do not stop for pedestrians reliably.
Scams and watch-outs
- Unmarked or unofficial airport drivers approaching you in the hall: use the official taxi counter or your booked car.
- Street helpers who offer to guard your parked car for cash: use a paid lot or your hotel garage, and leave nothing visible inside.
- Taxi drivers who say the meter is broken: ask for the meter, get out and take another taxi, or use a ride-hail app.
- Distraction thefts on downtown buses and pavements (a spilled drink, a dropped item): keep the phone in a front pocket and stay aware in crowds.
- Bag-slashing and phone-snatching from the pavement or a car window: carry the phone away from the kerb side and do not leave it on a café table.
