Before you start
Welcome to the Piazza della Libertà & Palazzo Pubblico audio walk in Città di San Marino. 3 stops: Palazzo Pubblico, Basilica di San Marino and Museo di Stato. Morning-only cluster: the square, the Palazzo Pubblico and the Basilica before the coaches; flat, paved and 30–45 minutes.
The Piazza della Libertà and Contrada Omagnano north to the Cava dei Balestrieri, and south to Porta San Francesco and Lo Stradone. Underfoot: stone paving and cobbles; slope: gentle; shade: low.
Città di San Marino is a capital you can walk in an hour and read for a week. A stonemason's refuge, a ridge of three towers, a town hall with two heads of state and a cake named for the skyline all sit within 25 minutes of each other on foot.
Before you start: Do not photograph the guards in the square without asking. Keep your eyes on the street, and pause the audio before you cross a road.
1. Palazzo Pubblico
Look for
- Piazza della Libertà
- Palace facade and clock tower
- Guards and the change of guard
Stop 1 of 3: Palazzo Pubblico. Arrival point: Walk to Piazza della Libertà.
The town hall of the Republic on Piazza della Libertà: a 19th-century building with a guarded square; look from outside, and enter only when the interior is open.
Look for Piazza della Libertà: The square with the Statue of Liberty and the palace front. Look for Palace facade and clock tower: Neo-Gothic, completed in 1894. Look for Guards and the change of guard: Times in season; check.
They take office on 1 April and 1 October, and on those days a ceremony at the Palazzo Pubblico marks the handover, with a procession, uniforms and a crowd on the square. It meets in the Palazzo Pubblico, the neo-Gothic town hall on the square, completed in 1894 on the site of older buildings. The Guard of the Council, in red and blue uniforms, stands at the Palazzo Pubblico, and the Fortress Guard patrols the towers.
Do not photograph the guards without asking. Most crowded 11:00–15:00; quiet at opening. Allowed outdoors; ask before photographing guards.
Walk:Next, stop 2: Basilica di San Marino. It's about 3 minutes on foot. Route: Walk along Contrada del Collegio. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
2. Basilica di San Marino
Basilica di San Marino (Basilica del Santo)
Stop 2 of 3: Basilica di San Marino. Locally, Basilica di San Marino (Basilica del Santo). Arrival point: Walk from Piazza della Libertà along Contrada del Collegio (about 3 minutes).
The neoclassical church that holds relics of Saint Marinus, the founder of the republic: free, 20 minutes, and best before the coach groups; cover shoulders and knees.
Cover shoulders and knees; no flash and no photography during services. Quiet before 10:30; busy with tour groups at midday in summer; services on Sundays and feast days. Shoulders and knees covered. Free entry; treat it as a short, quiet stop between the square and the museum. The building is 19th-century, not medieval: it stands on the site of an older church. Dress rules apply even in summer heat; carry a light scarf or cover-up. Keep voices low: this is a working church, not only a sight. Go in the morning, before the tours arrive from Rimini.
Walk:Next, stop 3: Museo di Stato. It's about 3 minutes on foot, about 50 metres to the north. Route: Walk back towards the square. The tour waits here. Tap I've arrived when you get there.
3. Museo di Stato
Stop 3 of 3: Museo di Stato. Arrival point: Walk from Piazza della Libertà (about 3 minutes).
The state museum in a palace by the square: archaeology, coins and the story of the republic, indoors and cool; go in the hottest hours or in rain, and allow an hour.
Do not touch the exhibits; ask staff about flash. Quiet most days; school groups on some spring weekdays. Ask at the desk; flash is usually restricted. Treat it as the rain and heat plan for the old town: it is indoors and close to the square. Labels may be in Italian with some English; check at the desk for a leaflet. The collection covers local archaeology, art and the republic's history; exact rooms change. Buy the ticket at the desk; ask whether a combined ticket with the towers is on sale (check). Start with the archaeology rooms, then the coin and medal collections.
End of the walk
That's the end of the Piazza della Libertà & Palazzo Pubblico walk. To carry on, Guaita tower & the ridge path is about 12 minutes away (walk east along the ridge path, uphill). To carry on, Borgo Maggiore is about 15 minutes away (cable car or walk downhill).
