Santa Barbara County runs about 110 km along US 101, from Carpinteria in the south to Santa Maria in the north, with the Santa Ynez Valley over the mountain crest. The coast and the wine valley are 45–60 minutes apart by car. Pick one base and drive out; changing hotels to chase both ends costs more time than the drives.

US 101 through the county is the only fast road; a crash or a wildfire closure can add an hour or more, so leave slack before a flight.
Coastal fog (June gloom) can sit over the beaches until midday while the valley is sunny — plan beach mornings loosely.
Wine-country roads are two-lane and shared with cyclists; do not taste and drive.
